The oldest garden area has become an integral part of the famous Historic Axis of Paris. Its beautiful green neighborhoods stretch between the Louvre and the Champs Elysees, covering an area of over 25 hectares, which is 920 meters long and 325 meters wide. The dividing strip between the Louvre and the garden is the Place de Carrousel, while the Place de la Concorde separates the Tuileries Gardens from the Champs Elysees.

History of the Tuileries Garden

The idea of creating a garden and park ensemble belonged to Catherine Medici, the founder of the Tuileries castle. For the first time, the garden, at her direction, began to be planted in 1564, and the first planner and creator was Bernard Palissy.

The area set aside for the park was a pedestrian area for walking. At that time, Italian-style parks were in vogue, when the entire allotted area was divided into six alleys in length and eight alleys in width.

The garden and park zone was laid out in the place where previously clay was mined in an open pit for the production of tiles (ceramic tiles). In French, the tile sounds like a tuile, from this word the name of the castle and the Tuileries garden was formed.

The court architect strove to introduce an original idea, thus a garden-theater appeared. A theater stage, flower beds and two voluminous pools were installed here. Since then, the theater garden has been a wonderful decoration of the now defunct Tuileries castle, which was barbarously burned down in 1871.

Garden attractions

The garden is considered to be the oldest urban park in Paris, a favorite recreation place for citizens and tourists. There are a number of attractions on its territory, each of which has its own history and arouses a certain interest.

Entrance to the garden

The main entrance to the Tuileries from the Place de la Concorde is notable for a wonderful gallery of park sculptures, which are exact copies of their originals, standing in Parisian palaces.

The main decoration of the entrance is considered to be two equestrian monuments by Antoine Koysevox "Glory on horseback on Pegasus" and "Mercury", and along the park alley there are marble sculptures of the goddess Venus, Julius Caesar and Agrippina. Park sculptures surround the terrace along the artificial reservoir, as well as the Orangerie Museum.

Orangerie Museum - Musée de l'Orangerie

The building that currently houses this wonderful museum, built in 1852. Its strict forms fully corresponded to the park style of that time and the architectural ensemble common to the Tuileries Palace. It was originally planned to grow orange trees in this greenhouse, but in fact the building was used only for city exhibitions during festive festivities or for rehearsals of soldiers' marches.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, this building was transferred to the balance of the Paris Fine Arts Administration to organize a museum.

Kiss of Rodin statue

Rodin's statue "The Kiss", which is located in the Tuileries Gardens, is an exact copy of the original marble sculpture of this famous sculptor, which is in his museum along with other works.

She is an artfully crafted stone couple hugging for a passionate kiss who looks both erotic and sinless at the same time. The young man holds a book in his hands, which emphasizes the platonic nature of their relationship with his beloved.

Initially, Rodin gave this sculpture the name “Francesco da Rimini. And the prototype of her was the heroine of the "Divine Comedy" Dante, who fell in love with her husband's younger brother. The end of this story was tragic, and Rodin's sculpture itself, like its exact copies, delights the eyes of our contemporaries.
