The Fine Art Gallery of one of the most successful collectors and gallery owners of our time of Austrian origin (Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac) opened in the Parisian quarter of Le Marais in 1991.
Metamorphoses of architecture
For the first few years, the exhibition hall occupied only insignificant areas of a three-story building, but over time, the excellent results of work made it possible to increase them to 1 thousand m2. In 2012, Tadeusz Ropak opened his second gallery on avenue General Leclerc in the north-eastern suburb of Paris Pantin (Thaddaeus Ropac Pantin). In a former industrial building, he creates a spacious exhibition complex covering an area of 4,7 thousand m.2.
Renovated by Buttazoni & Associates, the architectural features of the industrial style of the late 19th century have been preserved in general. During the reconstruction, it was divided into 4 large halls with transparent vaults from 7 to 12 m high, providing natural lighting for the exposition.
An area of 2 m has been determined for the deployment of temporary exhibitions2. In addition to them, there are artists' workshops, a library with a fund of literature on art, a conference room, a repository of works of art, an archive and a cozy cafe.
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has for many years collaborated with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in organizing exhibitions and gallery shows, discovering new names of artists in the art world. She regularly takes part in major exhibitions of contemporary art held under the auspices of the Armory Show (USA), Art Basel (Switzerland), Frieze Art Fair (UK) and FIAC (France).
In the halls of the gallery, personal and group art exhibitions are organized. She constantly collaborates with 60 leading artists and sculptors of our time, the list of whose names is constantly expanding. The gallery has repeatedly presented in its halls the works of A. Katz, Yang Pei Ming, G. Baselitz, A. Kiefer, R. Longo. It hosted personal exhibitions of A. and P. Poirier, E. Warhol, D. Boyes, A. R. Penck.
Tadeusz Ropak is constantly on the lookout for new names of outstanding artists. It was in his gallery that the paintings of one of the outstanding artists of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries were exhibited for the first time. J. M. Basquiat. The collector was one of the first to present contemporary art from South Asia and the Middle East to the European art community. Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac made it possible for sculptors and ceramic artists K. Prantl, T. Cragg and M. Baumgartner to show their works to the general public.
The staff of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac are constantly providing consulting services to art museums around the world, private collectors and government agencies. Beginning in 1983, the Austrian connoisseur of contemporary art T. Rapak, in addition to Paris, opened his galleries in Salzburg, Linz and London. For his outstanding contribution to the popularization of contemporary visual arts in 2014, he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.
