History of the Orangerie Museum

The construction of the museum took place in 1852. It was led by the famous architect of the time, Firmen, and then Ludovico Visconti. The building was originally erected as a greenhouse for the cultivation of orange trees. The place for the construction was not chosen by chance, because the strict forms of the greenhouse were perfectly combined with the Tuileries Palace (which was destroyed during the second French Revolution) and the palace ensemble on the Place de la Concorde.

Basically, the building of the greenhouse was used for various industrial and garden exhibitions, examination marches of soldiers and festive festivities, and not for its intended purpose. In 1921, the greenhouse was transferred under the auspices of the Fine Arts Administration, and the building soon became a fine museum.

Within the walls of the museum there are two permanent exhibitions, and another one that changes periodically.

Water lilies - Les Nymphéas

Unusual and so mesmerizing, Claude Monet's Water Lilies are truly a great work of art, made by an equally great and famous artist of the last century. They embody the most daring ideas and views of the author, allowing not only to see the full depth of his genius, but also to enjoy it to the fullest.

Located in two huge elliptical halls, they are better than ever presented to the general public in all their diversity. This is exactly what the brilliant artist sought, experimenting with the depth of light, shadow and, of course, shades of watercolors, being in his native Gyverni garden. Halls of this shape were also not chosen by the creators of the museum by chance. Being in close proximity, both paintings complement each other, evoking a sense of a single whole. Thanks to the interesting play of halftones, as well as the incredibly attractive lighting of the hall, they look truly magical, transporting visitors to the very garden where Monet himself once was.

Water lilies - Les Nymphéas

Through his work, the author hoped to inspire humanity that the beauty of nature is what it is worth living for. He focused his attention on water lilies, as a symbol of the purity and grace of nature, making it clear that natural consistency knows no boundaries. And, we can safely say that the desire of the famous artist was fulfilled.

Being the most important and popular part of the entire exhibition, Water Lilies not only embodied all the most beautiful and incredible colors of this world, but also became the central exposition of the entire museum. It is here, looking at the magnificent colors, shadows and midtones, that one wants to relax and completely surrender to the great genius.

La Collection Jean Walter & Paul Guillaume

Another equally important and touching exposition is the exhibition of works by Walter Gillaume. Each of the paintings on display in this room has its own special story, unlike any other.

The fact is that even in his youth, Walter dreamed not of drawing pictures with his own hand, but of collecting works of famous artists, arranging them in a certain way. His dream was a whole exhibition, which collected paintings from all over the world and different centuries. The main theme and idea of ​​his collection was the beginning of the XNUMXth century.

With the help of some very famous friends, Walter Gillaume hoped to gather under one roof the works of such great masters as Picasso, Satine, Derain, and Marie Laurencin. However, he did not refuse the work of their predecessors, such as Renoir. It is worth noting that thanks to the considerable support of friends, he really found and collected many works of great artists who worked in different eras. It is impossible not to note the fact that collecting their creations, he not only tried to combine them into a single collection, but also to find some similar feature. To find some idea that would be traced in all the paintings, regardless of when exactly they were written.

However, his ideas and dreams were not destined to come true, because in 1934 Walter suddenly dies for reasons still unknown. It would seem that his entire collection should now disintegrate and go into the hands of ordinary collectors, but this will not happen. Gillaume's wife Domenica decides to resume her search for paintings and, thus, continues her husband's work, recreating a single collection, as he wanted it.

For another 36 years, she has been collecting it, based on the main ideas and aspirations of her beloved man. Despite the fact that almost everyone is already desperate to see the exhibition, only Domenica does not lose hope and continues to work hard to find and arrange all the paintings. And finally, in 1960, she took the complete collection of Gillaume to France, where she exhibited for all to see.

Adolfo Wildt exhibition

Adolfo Ould is an Italian sculptor dedicated to creating real creations in the style of symbolism. This great genius believed that by combining several styles, you can achieve a truly unsurpassed effect, such as would not be obtained using the creator only one specific theme. To prove his point, the sculptor combines symbolism, expressionism, the ancient Renaissance and even the neo-Gothic movement that was becoming popular at that time. By this he is trying to prove that the balance resulting from the fusion of several directions of art should create a truly masterpiece of sculpture.

However, the works of the famous sculptor were practically not recognized by the world community. Someone called them too expressive, others simply could not understand the meaning of such confusion. Despite the fact that Adolfo tried to get as close as possible to the very essence of creating sculptures and make them something special in a person's life, he was still only a mediocre master, not recognized by the world. Such behavior with art, the creation of bold and truly creative and unusual works, more and more angered the public.

Nevertheless, there were those among the protesters who more or less recognized the work of the master, calling him "... a translator of a weary, restless, trusting and inquisitive age" (Hugo Ogetti). It cannot be said that even they fully recognized the true genius of this man, nevertheless, they at least saw his great potential in creating unusual and new sculptures.

For the first time, his exhibition was demonstrated to the general public thanks to the Cassa dei Risparmi di Forli Foundation, which agreed to open it in France. Due to the unusual, extraordinary and, of course, the genius of all the expositions of this exhibition, Adolfo Wilde was called the earliest sculptor of the 20th century, who declared himself in such an original form. Now his art is not only recognized by the whole world, but also puts on a par with other masters of several eras.
